2009 WINNERS

SPORTSWOMAN OF THE YEAR - 2009

Emma Moffatt

World Champion Triathlete Emma Moffatt was named the Queensland Sportswoman of the Year at the Womensport Queensland Gala Dinner on Friday night. She edged out Swimmer Jessicah Schipper, Australian Hockey Captain Madonna Blyth, Surfer Stephanie Gilmore and Cyclist Anna Meares to take home the award.

Emma won the World Triathlon Championship Series Grand Final on the Gold Coast in September, where she became the 2009 World Champion. Throughout the year she also won the Kitzbuhel, Washington and Hamburg legs of the series.


POWERADE JUNIOR SPORTSWOMAN OF THE YEAR

Emily Seebohm

Swimmer Emily Seebohm took out the Powerade Junior Sportswoman of the Year after winning a Bronze Medal in the 100m backstroke at the World Championships in Rome this year.

She was also a part of the 4 x 100m Medley Relay Team that won a Silver Medal at the Championships.

At the Australian Short Course Championships in Tasmania in August Emma broke the 100m individual medley World Record.


SYLVIA AND CLEM JONES EMERGING ATHLETE AWARD

Emma Jackson

The Sylvia and Clem Jones Emerging Athlete Award for 2009 was given to Triathlete Emma Jackson.

The 18-year-old claimed a Silver Medal at the Junior World Championships on the Gold Coast in September and racing in the Elite Women category, finished 6th at the Perth ITU Triathlon Oceania Cup and 2nd at the Sendai Bay ITU Triathlon Asian Cup.

More recently Emma won the Noosa Triathlon


WOMENSPORT QUEENSLAND - CONTRIBUTION TO SPORT AWARD

Pam Hamilton-Smith

Pam Hamilton Smith was given the Contribution to Sport Award for her involvement in basketball.

Pam has been involved in basketball as a player, coach and administrator for 43 years and remains the longest serving representative senior player for Queensland.

Pam was also named Basketball Australia's 2008 Female Coach of the Year after 33 years coaching Women's teams.


THE PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARD

Madonna Blyth

The People's Choice Award, which is decided by public vote from the five finalists, was won by Hockeyroos captain, Madonna Blyth.

This year Madonna led the Hockeyroos to a Silver medal in the Champions Trophy and was awarded Player of the Tournament. 

 


THE DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNITIES RISING STAR AWARDS

The Department of Communities Rising Star winners received scholarships of $1600, to help them with travel and training costs.
